Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Argentina’s automobile sales probably continued to decline in December as a global financial crisis undermined exports and discouraged domestic sales.
Sales have been falling month over month since August, said Horacio Delorenzi, general director of the Buenos Aires-based Argentine Chamber of Car Dealers.
“People are waiting to see what will happen with this crisis,” said Delorenzi in a telephone interview. “If the crisis doesn’t ease, our sales will suffer even further.”
Car dealers in November sold 35,617 units, the fewest since December 2005, according to the country’s Automakers Chamber. The chamber will release December’s figures tomorrow after 12 p.m. New York time.
President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner on Dec. 4 announced a $1 billion credit program to help consumers buy about 100,000 cars as part of a plan to reverse the slowdown of the automobile industry.
“We have to wait and see the results of this government plan,” said Nicolas Todesca, an economist at Delphos Investment research company in Buenos Aires. “The industry is also suffering from a decline in exports, as Brazil, which has come to a standstill, is our main partner and buys most of our output.”
