Doha Agreement Would Stimulate World Trade, Lamy Writes in WSJ

By Chris Peterson
Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Concluding the stalled Doha agreement on world trade would stimulate the global economy and provide much-needed jobs, World Trade Organization Director-General PascaL Lamy wrote in today's Wall Street Journal.
Trading according to an agreed set of rules has proved able to encourage and multiply growth for over 50 years, and the international system has shown itself to be a strong defense against protectionism, Lamy wrote.
Agreement on Doha wouldn't be enough on its own to solve the global economic crisis, but it would provide a stimulating influence and make the point that governments are able to work together at time of crisis, Lamy concluded.
